The Turkish journalist, documentary filmmaker and author Can Dündar is one of the most prominent experts on Turkey. In his new book Die rissige Brücke über den Bosporus. A Century of the Turkish Republic and the West , he vividly describes the main features and characteristics of Turkish politics, society and culture, while also taking an insightful and critical look at the behaviour of the German media and politics. This information opens up a further, more in-depth view of the events and backgrounds that are the subject of HAYDAR TANZT. In the discussion, Dündar will present his book and key facts, accompanied and musically commented by Alevi music by composer and Bağlama specialist Taner Akyol. The discussion in three languages will be moderated by Bernhard Glocksin, artistic director of the Neukölln Opera.
Can Dündar is one of the leading experts and critics among the international public. The columnist and former editor-in-chief of the Cumhuriyet newspaper, who also works as a TV presenter, was accused of espionage in 2015, arrested and sentenced in absentia to almost 20 years in prison for “espionage” and “supporting terrorism”. He was acquitted of the charge of making secret information public. Dündar has been working in exile in Germany since 2016. He is editor-in-chief of the web radio Özgürüz (“We are free”). His more than 20 books deal with the founder of the state Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Ismet Inönü, Nâzım Hikmet and others. Since 2016, Dündar has written a regular political column in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit. Taner Akyol is “an institution” in Berlin – a leading Bağlama soloist and teacher (including at the Mannheim Music Academy) as well as a composer with commissions from the Komische Oper Berlin, the Nationaltheater Mannheim and others.
