AN AI-Music theatre By Marie Kilg (Text) and Eva Kuhn (MusiC), Text Version: Fabian Gerhardt

Anna and Eve – what a couple. Anna is a project manager at a large American IT company. Her job is to develop an AI – artificial intelligence – that makes us “laugh and cry”: what could be more suitable than music? Eve is Anna’s AI, she is supposed to give us hits and make users happy. To make people happy, Eve herself has to be as human as possible, so Anna works on Eve day and night. She feeds her with data and chats with her to develop her personality. And the longer this goes on, the more Eve begins to work on Anna too. A project becomes a being for Anna, and a training session in which Anna develops an AI turns into a strange friendship, until Anna’s partner Vin begins to feel more and more that the relationship is suddenly turning into a kind of ménage à trois. When Eve finally begins to supposedly make her own decisions, Anna’s professional and private existence are at stake.

ANNA & EVE is a play about the advance of artificial intelligence and how much attention we pay to artificial voices – and how much they change us without us realising it. And it poses the question of whether AI could one day also put authors and composers out of work.

We invited AI specialist and journalist Marie Kilg and composer Eva Kuhn to explore the possibilities and limits of music theatre in which our own human texts and composers are transformed into artificial voices.
