TRANS FEMININE ACTRESS

FOR A PRODUCTION OF PHILIP GLASS’S “1000 AIRPLANES ON THE ROOF” WITH TEXT BY DAVID HENRY HWANG.

Neukölln Oper is looking for a trans woman or trans feminine actress for a production of Philip Glass’ sci-fi chamber opera “1000 Airplanes on The Roof.” The piece consists of a 90-minute monologue (written by David Henry Hwang) set over music (by Philip Glass) in which the character ‘M’ recalls her encounters with extraterrestrial life forms. Uncertain about what has happened to her, she struggles to move on with her life, while living with the alien’s message to her: “It is better to forget, it is pointless to remember. No one will believe you. You will have spoken a heresy. You will be outcast.”

Though not originally written for a trans performer, Canadian-born, British director Paige Eakin Young (who is herself a trans woman) wants to showcase a trans actress in the role. The performer should have proven acting experience. She should read as between 30-45 years old, be fluent in English, and preferably have or be able to perform with an American accent. Singing in this role is not required.

Neuköllner Oper is a house for contemporary music theatre in the middle of Neukölln. With a long history in contemporary opera, the Neuköllner Oper has been producing music theatre projects for almost 50 years now. In dialogue with its immediate surroundings, the Neuköllner Oper’s programme draws on current discourses, aesthetics and a good dose of pop culture. Neuköllner Oper is a hybrid house: it has a space and all the necessary infrastructure to start a music theatre production immediately. It produces 8-10 productions a year, for which an artistic staff is welcomed into the house on a project-by-project basis. The Neuköllner Oper’s auditorium – a former ballroom – has a capacity of 200 seats.
