Ocaña on the Ramblas of Barcelona, Ocaña in front of the Brandenburg Gate, in the early 80s, when the Berlinale showed a film about him – about his extravagant appearances, his provocative performances until his bizarre death in the flames of a self-designed dress. Ocaña was an artist, a rebel and a drag queen, his life and work made a mark far beyond Barcelona and Spain.
beyond Barcelona and Spain, which at that time was beginning to free itself from the rigidity of a patriarchal, authoritarian regime of General Franco.
The play OCAÑA. KÖNIGIN DER RAMBLAS was written by the Catalan director and much-performed author Marc Rosich and the composer and guitarist Marc Sambola in 2018, commissioned by the Neuköllner Oper, at that time with Denis Fischer as Ocaña and with “his” music, the coplas, the passionate Spanish “hit songs” that deal with great feelings in small everyday life and so much more. For the Òpera de Butxaca in Barcelona, the piece was set up for award-winning actor and singer Joan Vázquez and Marc Sambola on guitar, and has enjoyed years of success in this version as a terrific one-man show, awarded the 2019 Critics’ Prize and 2019 Audience Award.
After last year’s acclaimed performance, we have invited again Joan Vázquez as a queer icon and Marc Sambola, guitar, with the successful production of our Catalan co-producers OBNC, directed by Marc Rosich.
